Fashion Trend of Watches in 2008

Every spring after the BASEL World Watch, Clock and Jewelry Show and Salon International dela Haute Horlogerie, global watch market will be immersed into fashions. The two fairs are guides to the global watch industry, where well designed products and fashionable models are concurrently presented by various brands and form the mainstream. Fashions of this year may be summarized as follows:

1. Big shell is the shiniest point nowadays
Although big-shell watches have been popular over years until building the current theme,
trend of this year is to have bigger and bigger shells. Movado Museam 60mm series are the biggest watch with 18K titanium cover embedded with 60 diamond pieces and furnished with black crocodile-veritable strap, in 60mm diameter; Glashutte 42mm, Omega Chronoscope 41mm, Lange & Sohne 43mm and even Longines, despite of its normal gentle style, also presents its42mm diameter sports watch. Big-shell watches may easily look unconstrained and bold and people whole like such designs are normally personalized, willing to show and desiring to be different from others and noticed by others
2. Multi-function timing watches are mainstream models presented by various brands this
year, with the highest exposure.
Multi-function watches have always played roles over years, but seem different this year
because of focus in timing watches. Almost all the brands have presented their flag oductsin this field: Duome tre Chronographe has 9 pointers distributed in 5 areas, with he timing area able to count 11 hours 59 minutes; Blancpain Fifty Fathoms series can make timing 300m underwater; Glashutte Senator Rattrapante has two second pointer for concurrent timing, recording two durations starting at the same time but ending at the different time; Bucherer Patravi timing watches integrate the functions of timing, memorized timing, reward-hour timing, big calendar and calendar energy reservation. Multi-function timing watches have so many high-end brands concentrating on them, believed as a shine view in the fairs.
3. Composite 3-D watch face reflects precise modern techniques
In the above-mentioned two fairs, watch faces have been innovatively designed with 3D,
multi-layer or composite concepts. While big-shell models bring new space to watch face design, simple 2D layout has gone into history with composite watch face in layers nstead.Such new structure will fully reflect modern techniques such as laser engraving nd precise compression. Zenith Grande Class open Concept is a good example; its frame structure centered at 11 o’clock location and engraved face enable users to appreciate working accessories inside the core. Together with Y-shape second pointer, engraved small face and energy-saving display, the multi-layer composition shows a brand new technical world and tastes modern.
4. Engraving techniques present complicated sense
Mechanical watches are alive because of transmission between wheels, and engraving design is
the best technique to show moving sense. In this year’s fairs, attractive engraving treatments may be classified into two types, one is full engraving enabling full transparent view from face to rear shell, with sandwich plate engraved, and the other is local engraving, such as exposure of core at the shaking plate location or balance spring location. This year Zenith presents one model of engraved watch with blue sapphire made sandwich plate, giving special transparency.
5. New types of materials enhance user-friendly effects
Plastic straps are very popular this year. Previous people got used to consider plastic
products cheap, but nowadays such materials are more known for its sweet and moisture resistance, and most importantly, comfort and no sensitiveness to skin. Zenith Defy treme, idea from F1 racing, is designed with black carbon fiber watch shell, plastic strap, and rose gold decorating text, building strong contract and surprising impact. Audi watches also furnish comfortable plastic straps to shiny watch shells, looking both high-class and user-friendly. Breguet, a classic brand, also uses plastic straps.

6. Rose gold has been mainstream of gold watches
Gold watches may vary from titanium, gold, to rose gold. This year rose gold continue
expanding its market area while gold watches shrink. Patek Philippe, Jaeger, Vacheron Constantin, Bvlgari, Ulysse Nardin and Rolex have all produced more of their rose gold series and helped rose gold to be the mainstream. Compared to gold, rose gold looks oreelegant, gentle and taste.
7. Square and bottle-shape designs increase slightly
Square and bottle-shape designs take important part in non-mainstream out of circular
shapes. Such designs can impress richer layers, specifically for square models, this year there are Piaget Altiplano, Rado, Hamilton, JeanRichard, Van Cleef & Arpels and Tissot presenting their square watches and IWC and Parmigiani presenting their bottle-shape watches. IWC’s latest Da Vinci series absorb smooth curves to hide the meaning of ergy and go-ahead, and Parmigiani’s bottle-shape design is rose gold embedded with amond, contributing more leisure taste.

8.     Variant Arabic numbers are one characteristic
Texts on watch face include Roman number, Arabic number, text blocks and text points; such
symbols, while expressing time, show variance in design styles. The numbers 2, 6, 9, 12 or 2, 4, 6, 8 with moving sense are often selected in fashion watches. In the 2nd story of Hall 1, many famous dress brands and cosmetic brands present their watches matching fashion dresses, with variant Arabic numbers frequently used.
